Accessing NDAR
Access to the NDAR portal is restricted to qualified researchers and their immediate staff. To request an account, specify the permissions needed and include the necessary supporting documentation. Permissions may also be added after an account is created.
To assist researchers, two environments are supported:
Important: For those interested in understanding NDAR, first request an NDAR Demonstration account at
http://ndardemo.nih.gov. The Demonstration Portal contains the same functionality as
that of the NDAR Portal but contains only sample data, allowing prospective NDAR users to more easily understand NDAR. All account requests to the NDAR Demonstration Portal
will be approved. However, you will be required to upload documents to receive Collection and ASD shared query data access. In the demonstration environment, upload a blank document to request these privileges.
For GUID software in the demonstration environment, you will still be required to upload a valid Software Transfer Agreement as defined below.
Data Access Summary
The table below provides a summary of the permissions supported in NDAR, followed by descriptive information associated with these permissions.
| Request Type | Privileges | Documents Needed | Signature and Approval(s) |
|
Submit data to NDAR Central Repository
|
Allows an investigator to create a NDAR Collection, which is a container that holds submitted data in NDAR and allows the owner to assign permissions and associate supporting documentation
|
Data Submission Agreement
|
Cosigned by the Institutional Business Official and Principal Investigator. The NDAR Data Access Committee (DAC) approves a submission request
|
|
Access NDAR ASD Research Data
|
Allows an investigator to create an NDAR Study and access ASD data broadly shared within NDAR
|
The SF-424R_and_R and either the
NDAR Data Access Agreement and/or a federated data access agreement
|
Cosigned by the Institutional Business Official and Principal Investigator. The NDAR Data Access Committee (DAC) approves permission to access shared data in NDAR
|
|
GUID Generation
|
Allows an individual to receive the software to generate GUIDs
|
The Software Transfer Agreement
|
The Software Transfer Agreement is signed by the recipient of the software. NDAR Staff approve access to generate GUIDs
|
|
Access NDAR Portal
|
No specific permission. However, an NDAR Portal account may be assigned permissions by researcher staff
|
No specific document is required, however, a valid research purpose should be included in the account request
|
NDAR Staff approve portal accounts

Data Submission and NDAR Collection Creation Permission
To submit data into the NDAR Central Repository, an investigator will need to complete
the
Data Submission Agreement, electronically copy it
and upload it to NDAR when requesting an account (or afterwards directly within the NDAR portal). Signatures from both the investigator
responsible for acquiring research data and an NIH-recognized institutional business official are required. The NDAR
Data Access Committee (DAC)
approves the Data Submission Agreement allowing the investigator to then create NDAR Collections. Note that the Submission Agreement is specific
to the data being submitted. An investigator may have multiple agreements based upon the research they are conducting. To accommodate this need,
each NDAR Data Submission Agreement is made available in an investigator’s profile, allowing the appropriate agreement to be associated with an NDAR Collection.
See SOP-02 Data Submission Privilege to request this privilege.

Data Access and NDAR Study Creation Permission
The NIH
SF-424R_and_R is required for all data access requests.
Additionally, the NDAR
Data Access Agreement
is required to access shared ASD research data residing in the NDAR Central Repository or federated through NDAR. For access to NDAR ASD data,
the agreement is signed by the investigator and an NIH recognized institutional business official. The NDAR Data Access Agreement is reviewed
and approved by the NDAR Data Access Committee.
Individuals working with an investigator may be named on the Data Access Agreement allowing one agreement to be used by all appropriate project team personnel requesting this privilege.
Federated data resources, when they become available through NDAR, may have their own access agreements.
See SOP-04 Data Access Permission to request this privilege.

GUID Generation Permission
Individuals who have access to personally identifiable information – available only at the researcher site – and who will generate GUIDs for data submission will require permission to do so. These individuals must request the GUID software when requesting an NDAR account. For security reasons, the GUID software is specific to an individual and the individual’s workstation.
Refer to the GUID User Manual for more information on generating NDAR GUIDs.
See
SOP-08 GUID Generation Permission to request this privilege.

Portal Account
An individual working with an investigator may request a NDAR Portal Account. This account provides no specific privileges in NDAR.
However, with a Portal Account, an investigator may grant their colleagues access to administer a specific NDAR Collection or NDAR Study owned by the investigator.
See SOP-01 NDAR Account to request an NDAR Portal account.
